Solent Green Deal launched
Tommy Walsh, celebrity builder and TV presenter, has officially launched the Solent Green Deal, a joint council initiative, in a bid to help Hampshire households drive down their energy costs. The Ground Force presenter joined councillors and local residents for the launch which took place at a specially fitted out home at 48 Atlantic Park View in Eastleigh on Friday 14th June.
The house has been transformed into an energy saving experience to showcase in a fun way, how an array of measures can make a big difference to costs, efficiency, warmth and carbon emissions. The energy saving experience at Atlantic Park View is now open for everybody to visit and exhibits demonstration models, touchscreen panels, and a fun electricity-generating exercise bike.
Advisors will be on hand to discuss how Hampshire residents can become more energy efficient. Visitors will be able to take away free temperature gauges, fridge notepads, bookmarks and colouring packs for children. Opening times will be available on the website. Separate appointments can also be made for school visits.
The Solent Green Deal comprises Southampton City Council, Eastleigh Borough Council, Portsmouth City Council, and is supported by PUSH - the Partnership for Urban South Hampshire. Other councils throughout Hampshire are likely to join over the coming months.
By using the Green Deal, householders could save up to £800 a year. For example, having loft insulation could save people up to £175 a year, internal or external solid wall insulation could save up to £500 a year and by replacing a boiler which is more than 15 years old, could save up to £300 a year from energy bills.
Alex Parmley, speaking on behalf of the Solent Green Deal, said: “This is a really exciting moment which will show how, at a time when energy prices are constantly rising, bills can be brought under control in an affordable and hassle-free way.
We’ll remove the concerns of having an unknown company coming in to their home as well as provide a council assessor and trustworthy quotes from local installers. We’re not a private company so they can rest assured we will always be acting with their individual interests at heart.
People will feel the difference in their warmer homes and see it in their reduced energy bills though the impartial service the Solent Green Deal has to offer.”
The Green Deal involves no upfront spending by households as the costs are paid over a maximum of 25 years through energy bills. The expected energy savings must outweigh the cost of any improvements for the loan to be given.
First, householders are recommended to fill in the Green Deal Wizard to find out what improvements they could have in their home and how much they could save on their energy bills. They can then register their details and request an assessment.
People who sign up early to the Solent Green Deal could be in with a chance of receiving a discount amounting to cashback of up to £1,000. People on benefits or low incomes could be eligible to have the work done free of charge, as could those in properties with solid walls or narrow cavities.
